Hours of recorded conversation are transcribed and shaped into chapters in each person's own voice, then fact-checked and proofread.
Text and photographs are laid out page by page, with type, margins and pacing adjusted until every spread sits right.
Each portrait is retouched and adjusted for the specific paper we print on, which renders tones slightly differently.
Final files are prepared to the printer's specifications and sent for production.
The printer sends physical tests of the pages and digital proofs. We check them against our files and tests to sign them off.
We chose a thick, textured stock. When its delivery was delayed, we waited for it rather than accept a substitute.
Test sheets are run before the full print to check ink density and how the paper takes each image and text block.
Offset printing plates are made, and the pages are printed to large sheets of FSC certified bulky art paper.
Once the ink has cured, the sheets are folded, gathered and bound in linen-covered boards. The covers are embossed and debossed.
The books are sent to our warehouse on big pallets for individual packing.
